Founder and Certified Master Groomer

 Nancy Kallenbach-Han, founder of Dog's Best Friend and the Cat's Meow, has been a distinguished figure in the pet grooming industry since 1982. Her expertise as an NDGAA certified master groomer was solidified by winning numerous prestigious awards, including the Oster World Invitational Grand Championship at Intergroom in 1994 and Best in Show at the NDGAA Pacific Northwest Dog Grooming Contest in 1995. Recognized for her grooming talent, Nancy has been honored with the 1990 Golden Shear Award and nominations for American Groomer of the Year. Additionally, she held esteemed positions as a Hall of Fame member of Groomteam USA and an international grooming competition judge.

In the world of dog breeding and exhibition, Nancy's contributions are equally notable. She has successfully bred and shown Kerry Blue Terriers and Bedlington Terriers, producing numerous champions and nationally ranked dogs. Her breeding accomplishments include a Best of Breed win at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club dog show, further demonstrating her deep commitment to excellence in the canine world.

Now semi-retired, Nancy's legacy continues to inspire and shape the next generation of groomers and dog enthusiasts. Her profound impact on the grooming industry and show dog community is a testament to her enduring passion, skill, and dedication.

Co-Owner and Certified Master Groomer

Tomoko Hirokawa is an award-winning dog groomer, renowned for her expertise in all breeds. She has made a significant impact in the field as a dog show exhibitor, handler, and author of several articles in Japanese grooming magazines. She has been Nancy's partner and co-owner of Dog's best friend since 2003.

Tomoko's grooming journey began as a Veterinary Technician and Groomer in Niigata, Japan, and progressed through various roles, including a Grooming Instructor at Sepia Pet Care School in Tokyo. Her educational background includes certifications from prestigious institutions like the National Dog Groomers Association of America and the Japan Kennel Club. Tomoko's excellence in grooming is further evidenced by her multiple contest wins, including two first-place finishes in the WWPSA Grooming contest and a Best in Show.

Certified Master Groomer and Hand-stripping Expert

  Kumi Tachikake stands out in the pet grooming world, bringing expertise and a heart full of passion to her work. Her grooming journey began at Tokyo's top grooming school, setting the foundation for a career filled with achievements. She's made her mark in competitions, winning first place at prominent events like Superzoo and Groom Expo West, and even earning a Best in Show award.

But Kumi's talents don't stop at grooming. Her special touch with Bichon Frisés, Terriers, and hand-stripping has earned her numerous first place grooming contest ribbons. Her success in the show ring is just as impressive, with multiple Best in Show owner/handler awards highlighting her prowess.

In addition to her grooming and show successes, Kumi is also deeply involved in breeding, bringing the same level of dedication and care to nurturing the next generation of champion dogs. Her experience in breeding adds another layer to her comprehensive understanding of canine care, making her an invaluable asset to the pet grooming community.

Cat Groomer and Professional Animal Hygienist

Rachel, born and raised in the Bay Area, has been a valued member of the Dog's Best Friend and the Cat's Meow team since 1998, starting as a volunteer. With a lifelong love for all animals, Rachel has a special place in her heart for cats, making her the go-to cat groomer at our salon.

Her expertise isn't limited to grooming; Rachel has a keen interest in skin and coat care, always seeking the best ways to address these important aspects of pet wellness at the salon.

Outside of her professional life, Rachel enjoys a variety of hobbies that include reading, knitting, photography, and beachcombing. 

Associate Groomer

Mandilyn is the newest member of our team at Dog's Best Friend and the Cat's Meow, bringing fresh energy and a passion for pet care. Her journey to our salon is unique; after a chance meeting with Nancy at a grooming seminar in Salt Lake City, she was inspired to join us and bring her talents to the Bay Area.

Mandilyn is the proud owner of a German Shepherd, a bond that fuels her deep understanding and love for animals. Currently, she is honing her skills in grooming all breeds, with a keen interest in mastering the art of hand stripping. Eager to learn and grow, Mandilyn is quickly becoming proficient in various grooming techniques, and her enthusiasm for pet care is a delightful addition to our salon.
